In 2016, Annie Paul was invited to write a biography of Stuart Hall for the new, Caribbean Biography Series, initiated by Linda Speth. Paul’s book– published in 2020 – is an extended essay that grounds an introduction to Hall’s life and thought in his childhood in Jamaica.
Utilising Hall’s private papers from the 1940s and early 1950s– much of which remains unavailable to researchers – Paul invites a consideration of the significance of Hall’s education, and social and cultural formation in Jamaica for understanding his life and work. Aimed at an audience of Caribbean students, Paul also considers Hall’s later work in the light of contemporary political and cultural developments in the Caribbean.
